from BUSINESS LINE, September 18, 2009 Stone therapy is an ancient healing art which uses alternately the deep penetrating heat from smooth basalt rocks and cold from marble stones to promote relaxation, health and wellbeing. The placement of stones on the body varies depending on the treatment needed, such as relaxation or pain relief. Stone therapy is believed to improve the working of the lymphatic and immune systems, normalise body functions and assist the body in self-healing. It is said to stimulate the p roduction of neuro-chemicals to bring about a sense of wellbeing.

Stone therapy is today offered at several spas across the country. The Westin Sohna-Gurgaon Resort & Spa in Haryana offers Rollerssage, a combination of hot stone massage and Swedish massage. Heated, perfectly round semi-precious stones are set inside a massage tool that allows the stones to roll smoothly over the body.

You can pick any two stones for each session from among the ones available. Each stone is associated with different benefits, such as hematite for circulation; tiger eye for mental strength; rose quartz for calming effect; and sodalite for digestion. The spa's manager, Pratibha Mittal, says, "Heated semi-precious stones are specially selected for their energy-enhancing qualities and are rolled all over the body to melt away tension and relax tight muscles, while restoring balance to the energy sources. The combination of stones, heat, and human touch is unique to this treatment, which deeply relaxes the muscles and increases energy flow." The USP of stone therapy is the mineral-rich basalt volcanic stone, which helps smoothen the skin as well as balance the body's energy flow, says Dr Arun K. Tomson, spa manager at the Leela Kempinski Kovalam Beach, Thiruvananthapuram. The body and scalp massage uses hot stones and essential oils suited to individual needs to rejuvenate the body and mind, he says. VLCC Day Spa offers a combination of basalt stone therapy and bio-energy therapy. Says Dr Shobha Sehgal, business head of the spa, "Basalt stone therapy massage takes you back to ancient times when beauty treatments were luxurious experiences. The deep penetrating heat of the stone stimulates, relaxes and heals the body while it works with the energy flow to balance the chakras." Bio-energy therapy is a form of alternative therapy where various massage techniques and warm stones work in harmony to relax the body at its deepest level. The use of hands in conjunction with stones further helps balance the body's energy centres. Spa Soul at the Galaxy Hotel Shopping Spa, New Delhi, uses non-porous stones heated to a comfortable temperature for massaging various pressure points on the body. "It's excellent for joint and muscular pains. Popular as another form of energy work, this works on the same principles as Chakra healing," says the spa manager Jaspreet Kaur.

An "advanced tri-phase stone massage therapy" is on offer at Kaya Kalp - The Royal Spa in Agra. "This therapeutic massage with micronised minerals, malachite and zincite de-stresses you completely. Through the lymphatic drainage massage, waste products and toxins are removed from the body. It is highly recommended for those who love heat treatment and those who have sluggish circulation," says Melissa Wong, the Spa Director at Kaya Kalp.
